I have worked almost solidly with Grant and his Helidrill team since 2009 and have found them to be a great Company to work with.
I have worked with Grant on a 30 drill-hole rig fly-in project in rugged terrain with challenging weather conditions. Also on a large 50+ drill-hole drill out where he got along with the other drillers and off-siders and worked with the team very well. He has always had respect for his off-siders and has supported off-siders to step up to become drillers with strong mentoring and support eg. Dan Kelly.
Grant has always been personable, enthusiastic, innovative, and inventive, with a strong positive and optimistic ‘can do – get things done’ attitude. He has always been obliging regarding getting the right drilling equipment for the job through his strong network of drilling mates and suppliers, hours and working through to get the job done and is serious and proactive with Health and Safety matters . He is very organised and well prepared for any drilling contract and very fair to the customer. No challenge is a problem to him. He has always kept stand-by and down-time to an absolute minimum.

Although it is the policy of Solid Energy New Zealand not to provide references, I am pleased to provide a personal reference for Grant Brotherston and commend him to any future employer.
My association with Grant was through planning and supervising of a large number of HQ diamond core and stratapac holes drilled since 1997 by Grant as a driller and foreman of Alton Drilling, for Greymouth Coal Limited & Solid Energy New Zealand. From 2002 to 2006 Grant worked continuously for me as Senior Driller and part owner of Diamond Drilling. Over my 10 years as a resource geologist, Grant was the standout driller because of his considered approach to the job, consistent ability to produce high quality results, maintain a timeline, and proactively management health and safety. Grant was the preferred driller for any programme I was running.
Grant is an exceptional driller with 26 years of experience. He has mainly worked as a diamond driller, but has also undertaken RC & hammer drilling jobs and some water bore work. In good ground Grant produces above far above average rates of hole advance and core output. In bad ground, Grant will adjust his technique to maintain hole stability and obtain maximum core recovery without risking the equipment. The ability to understand the ground and adjust his technique is rare and means time consuming delays freeing downhole equipment almost never occurs when Grant is drilling. He has a sound mechanical knowledge, generally being able to diagnose and fix most pieces of drilling and pumping equipment.
Grant is proactive in his approach to health and safety, and is open to suggestions as a means of continuous improvement. During his time working for me, Grant implemented improvements in pad design, deck railing on high deck sites, emergency evacuation drills (combined drill with SENZ, Coastwide Helicopters & NZ Police), and minimum standards for first aid, communications and fire extinguishers onsite. Grand & I jointly undertook job risk assessments at the start of programmes followed by individual site checks, wrote a procedure for helicopter rig moves, and instituted “Safety Breakfasts” as a means of getting collective safety improvement across drilling, heli-support and geological staff. For me, the Safety Breakfasts were a standout producer of practical incremental health and safety improvement in drilling work at Greymouth & Reefton & I was hugely grateful for the co-leadership of Grant in doing this.
As a person Grant is a pleasure to work with. He is a natural communicator who reliably maintains daily update schedules and also makes contact to relay any unforeseen difficulties. He is open to discuss problems and works to achieve the required results. He is a dependable, hard-working and honest person who will go the extra mile to help out geological staff. He makes excellent billy coffee and has been a valued friend for many years now.
